Project description
and objectives:

Proposed rehabilitation of the "air-side" facilities at Atyrau Airport, in western Kazakhstan, and associated investments to improve airport efficiency and air transport operations in Kazakhstan.

Rehabilitation of the main runway and associated investments to improve operations at the airport. Assistance to the airport company to improve its financial management. Assistance to the Ministry of Transport & Communications with the legal and regulatory environment of air transport in Kazakhstan.

Transition impact:

Improved efficiency and commercialisation of operations at Atyrau Airport, plus associated changes in the legal and regulatory environment of air transport in Kazakhstan.

The client:

Atyrau Airport (AA) Company is an open joint-stock company which owns and operates the "air-side" facilities at Atyrau Airport. AA has been wholly owned by TransportNefteGas, Kazakhstan's state-owned oil and gas transport company (formerly KazTransOil) since 1998.

EBRD finance:

A sovereign guaranteed loan of US$ 24.5 million (€26.9 million).

Total project cost:

Approximately US$ 30 million (€33.3 million).

Environmental impact:

This project was screened B/0 requiring an Environmental Analysis. That Analysis will be carried out by independent consultants prior to Final Review. The environmental issues to be addressed in the Analysis include impacts associated with construction, e.g. noise, dust, pollution resulting from equipment cleaning and materials storage and handling; quarries and borrow sites which could have impacts on soils, water and the natural environment; general occupational health and safety issues; handling and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials; and waste management.

Possible additional technical cooperation will be included in the operation depending on the availability of funding.
