Project description
and objectives:

Proposed mortgage facility to Privredna Banka Zagreb (PBZ) for the financing of housing loan operations in Croatia.

The mortgage facility will enable PBZ to make long-term housing loans to private customers in Croatia.

Transition impact:

The proposed long-term loan will assist PBZ to further expand their housing loan activities without increasing the maturity mismatch in the bank’s asset and liability structure. In addition, the loan will support the provision of long-term funding to a large number of Croatians for the purchase or renovation of residences.

The client:

PBZ is the second largest commercial bank in Croatia with approximately €3 billion in assets, €321 million in shareholders’ equity and a 19 per cent market share in the Croatian banking sector. The bank operates from its headquarters, which are located in Zagreb, and controls a nation-wide network of 16 regional branches and 149 sub-branches. The bank is controlled by the Italian IntesaBCI Group, which acquired a 66.3 per cent stake in PBZ in 1999.

EBRD finance:

A proposed loan of €40 million to PBZ with a maturity of 12 years.

Total project cost:

€40 million

Environmental impact:

PBZ will assess environmental issues associated with housing loans as part of its property surveys. Sub-loans are required to comply, at a minimum, with national health, safety and environmental regulations and standards. PBZ will report to the Bank annually on environmental health and safety matters.
