EBRD and Baltic Special Fund support development of micro and small businesses in Estonia [Press Release]

Project description
and objectives:

DM 40 million bank-to-bank loan.

The objective of the project is to provide Eesti Uhispank with long-term financing for on-lending to Estonian private sector companies. Through syndication, the loan seeks to extend the maturity of commercial bank lending to Estonian banks.

Transition impact:

The project will extend the maturity of commercial lending to Estonian banks and will make long-term financing available to private sector Estonian companies.

The client:

Eesti Uhispank is the second-largest bank in Estonia by assets (as of the end of 1997). It is a universal bank serving retail and corporate clients in Estonia and the Baltic states. The bank provides loans, leasing products, trust services and other banking services to clients, which include small and large companies, individuals and government entities.

EBRD finance:

Bank-to-bank loan of DM 40 million (ECU 20 million). At least DM 7.5 million is expected to be syndicated to commercial banks. The loan will have a maturity of seven years.

Total project cost:

DM 40 million (ECU 20 million).

Environmental impact:

Eesti Uhispank will follow the EBRD's Environmental Procedures for Local Banks in relation to all sub-loans financed through the credit line. In implementing these procedures, it will assess potential environmental issues associated with sub-projects, which are required to comply, at a minimum, with local/national health, safety, environmental and public consultation requirements.
