One of the OCE's main functions is to strengthen the transition impact of projects. Its staff work closely with banking teams to assess the potential transition impact of projects and help build in transition-related features, for example through technical assistance or loan conditionalities. The OCE provides transition impact ratings for each project that the EBRD finances and monitors the transition achievements of projects after signing.
The OCE helps to shape the Bank’s strategic direction. It contributes to the formulation of EBRD’s strategic priorities in each country of operations through country strategies and sector policies, collects and analyses country data, evaluates macroeconomic risks, and assesses countries’ progress in transition.
The OCE manages an economic research programme focused on topics of policy relevance to EBRD countries of operation or to EBRD operations. The programme comprises large surveys, rigorous impact assessments as well as other empirical and applied theoretical research. Research output is disseminated via the Transition Report, the Regional Economic Prospects, a Working Paper series and other special reports and surveys.
The OCE collaborates with a wide variety of organisations.
The Office of the Chief Economist (OCE) is led by Erik Berglöf, who took up the position of Chief Economist in January 2006.
