New EBRD Director of Communications

BBC journalist Jonathan Charles is joining the EBRD as Director of Communications and will take up his new post in early 2011.

The breadth of work of the EBRD and its impact on economies from central Europe and the Western Balkans to central Asia presents a rich challenge to any Communications Director.

A strong knowledge of the Bank’s region, its politics and history is essential.

Jonathan Charles spent seventeen years travelling throughout the EBRD’s countries of operations as a senior correspondent, covering events in Russia, eastern and central Europe.

He reported from Russia during some of its most turbulent events, including the 1998 economic crisis and the Beslan school siege. Long-term postings have included Frankfurt, Brussels, Paris and New York.

His role at EBRD is the latest chapter in a long and distinguished career, during which he became very well established at the BBC and won several awards for his journalism.

He currently edits and presents the BBC World News European Breakfast programme, which is also broadcast on BBC1 in the United Kingdom.

A graduate of Oxford University, where he took a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics, Mr Charles’ specialist areas in journalism include economics, the EU and international diplomacy. He speaks French and German fluently.

Announcing the appointment, EBRD President Thomas Mirow said, “I am very pleased to welcome Jonathan Charles to the Bank as the Director of Communications. His experience as a journalist and his deep knowledge of the EBRD region will allow him to make a very strong contribution.”
