The new Environmental and Social Policy

The new Environmental and Social Policy was approved by the Board of Directors on 12 May 2008 and is effective as of 12 November 2008.

2008 Environmental and Social Policy  (0.5Mb)

The 2008 Environmental and Social Policy is a key document of the Bank which details the commitments of the agreement establishing the Bank particularly for the "promotion of environmentally sound and sustainable development".

As part of the revision of the 2003 Environmental Policy, the Bank undertook an extensive public consultation process. To ensure free participation of all interested parties and secure optimal quality of the revision, EBRD organised six one-day public consultation meetings in Budapest, Belgrade, Moscow, Tbilisi, Bishkek and London. As a result of this exercise, the Bank received a number of constructive comments which significantly aided the policy review. Read more under Environmental policy review.

The 2008 Policy will be translated into Russian very soon. It will consequently be translated into the relevant official languages of the countries of operation.

The new Public Information Policy

The new Public Information Policy (PIP) was approved by the Board of Directors on 12 May 2008 and is effective as of 1 September 2008.

Public Information Policy  (0.1Mb)

The 2008 Public Information Policy reaffirms the Bank’s commitment to the principles of transparency and accountability. It introduces a number of new elements of particular significance to the Bank. First, it implements procedural provisions for information requests and appeals. Second, it encourages public participation in the development of Country Strategies by posting draft strategies on the Bank’s website for 45 days with an invitation to the public to comment. Third, it includes environmental and social information and information about procurement and purchasing.

The 2007/2008 review was wide-ranging and included the public consultation process undertaken in parallel with the consultations on the Environmental and Social Policy. For more information about the PIP review, please visit dedicated web pages.

The 2008 Policy has been translated into Russian. The Bank will, on request, translate the Policy into the relevant official languages of the countries of operations.
