The President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Jean Lemierre, arrives in Bulgaria on Monday, 26 November for a two-day visit to participate in the Central European Initiative (CEI) summit and sign two projects funded by the EBRD. The visit underlines the importance the EBRD attaches to regional integration and the Bank’s support for Bulgaria.
During meetings with Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev and Finance Minister Plamen Oresharski, Mr Lemierre will reiterate the Bank's support for the country, particularly in the areas of energy efficiency, infrastructure, power and energy and in the corporate sector. As part of its support for private sector growth and foreign investments in the country, the EBRD is extending €6.75 million to the Austrian company Wienerberger to upgrade a brick plant near the town of Lukovit in north-western Bulgaria.
The EBRD is the largest investor in Bulgaria with more than €1.4 billion committed to projects across the country. Working with its many partners, the Bank has mobilised more than €5.7 billion for projects in Bulgaria.
