Lemierre to Kazakhstan for investors’ council
EBRD President Jean Lemierre will visit Kazakhstan this week to co-chair, with
President Nursultan Nazarbayev, the 13th Plenary Session of the Foreign
Investors’ Council (FIC), which meets in Karaganda on Friday 17 June.
The Council is a consultative and advisory body established in 1998 to enhance
the investment climate and create a favourable framework for investments in
Kazakhstan, and to promote the integration of Kazakhstan into the global
economy.
The co-chairs will hold a joint press conference at the FIC site after the
plenary session. Please call the EBRD’s Almaty office if you would like to
attend.
The EBRD’s operations in Kazakhstan are focused on diversifying its economy
out of the oil sector by building earning assets in the private sector and the
development of the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector. There are
well established and effective relationships between the Bank and the
government for financing in the transport and municipal areas.
The Bank has also seen a significant increase in the use of its trade
facilitation and grain receipts programmes. Agricultural development is
crucial for sustainable economic growth in Kazakhstan and will support the
country as it moves towards World Trade Organisation accession.
The Foreign Investors’ Council meeting is the third leg of Mr Lemierre’s tour.
Earlier in the week he visited St Petersburg for the Russia Economic Forum,
and Tajikistan.
