EBRD President Lemierre to visit Israel
EBRD President Jean Lemierre begins a three-day visit to Israel on Monday
during which he will meet government officials and representatives of the
business and banking communities. Israel has been a shareholder in the EBRD
since the Bank’s establishment in 1991 and active in various projects.
During his visit Mr Lemierre will meet Israel’s Minister of Finance, Ehud
Olmert, and the Governor of the Israel Central Bank and EBRD Governor for
Israel, Stanley Fischer. He will also participate in a seminar on investing in
Russia.
The EBRD has recently signed an equity investment in two Romanian subsidiaries
of Tnuva Central Cooperative, Israel’s largest food company. Israeli banks are
active participants in the EBRD’s Trade Facilitation Programme, a scheme to
support trade to, from and within the Bank’s 27 countries of operations.
The EBRD sees good potential to intensify its cooperation with Israeli
companies. Israel’s economy is strongly export orientated, while the Bank’s
region is growing faster than many other world regions. The good knowledge of
the region by many Israeli companies is seen as a good starting point for
further investments. To support this Mr Lemierre will sign a Memorandum of
Understanding with the Israeli export institute through which the EBRD will
have an extended arm of contact for business development in Israel.
