New website promotes renewables in EBRD region

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the renewable energy consultancy Black & Veatch have launched a website supporting renewable energy projects in central and eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The website provides the latest news on renewables in the region and is a venue through which project promoters can seek EBRD financing for their ventures. The website, www.ebrdrenewables.com , is supported by USAID.

The website covers the entire spectrum of renewable energy sources, including solid biomass, biogas, biofuels, hydro, wind, solar, ocean and geothermal power. Each of the 27 countries in the region has its own section within the website, which will include updates on each government’s renewable energy strategy and other developments.

Developers and investors are invited to bring their renewable energy projects to the attention of the EBRD, said Peter Reiniger, Business Group Director for the Bank’s Energy Group. Using the project “submit” feature on the website, investors and developers can immediately get access to EBRD and they can also submit their projects for review by Black & Veatch.

In 2003 Black & Veatch completed an EBRD assignment to assess the potential for renewables in the region. The study identified resource availability, promising projects, political and regulatory support mechanisms and other factors affecting the viability of potential renewable energy investments in the region. A primary result was the identification of significant renewable energy opportunities in the region and obstacles faced by project developers, particularly access to information.

Mr Reiniger said, “The most basic barrier to the promotion of renewable energy is lack of information about projects, regulations and available support. The website will help us reach out to renewable energy project investors and developers by providing up-to-date information and bringing project promoters into contact with the EBRD.”
