Tashkent Water Supply Improvement Project [Project Summary Document]
Projects in Uzbekistan [EBRD - Countries]

EBRD to improve water quality for people of Tashkent

$10 million loan to fight waterborne diseases and ensure 24-hour supply

The EBRD is lending $10 million to help finance badly needed investments in Tashkent’s water supply system. The loan will support the long-term aim of the local water authority and city administration to improve the Uzbek capital’s water quality and thus contribute to a reduction in waterborne diseases.

The 15-year loan is in line with the EBRD’s updated strategy on Uzbekistan, where, in the public sector, the Bank will concentrate on projects bringing real and direct benefits for the local population or projects with a cross-border element.

The loan, backed by a sovereign guarantee, will contribute to the first phase of Tashkent’s water-system upgrade, restoring running water round the clock in certain parts of this city of 2.3 million people. The ultimate goal of the project is the complete rehabilitation of Tashkent’s water supply system, where 28 percent of the water is at present lost due to leakages.

The Walloon regional government in Belgium and the European Union’s TACIS programme have provided support for the project.
