EBRD representatives visit Uzbekistan
Secretary General Johnny Åkerholm leads a delegation of senior EBRD officials on a visit to Uzbekistan this week as part of the Bank’s commitment to monitor developments in the country.
The visit is the first since the Bank’s Annual Meeting in Tashkent in May, and the first of a series being made in the context of the Bank’s strategy for Uzbekistan, which was released in March. The strategy sets forth how the EBRD may remain a key investor in Uzbekistan's private and public sectors. It commits the Bank to continue intensive policy dialogue with the Uzbek government and monitor progress on seven benchmarks that would accelerate Uzbekistan’s course of political and economic reform. The strategy also calls for a progress review within a year. The full text is available – in English and in Russian – at www.ebrd.com.
Mr Åkerholm, who is coordinating the Bank’s monitoring efforts in Uzbekistan, will meet Uzbek government officials, representatives of the diplomatic and business communities, and representatives of NGOs in the country. He will be accompanied by Laurent Guye, the EBRD Board Director representing Uzbekistan.
