EBRD appoints new director for Ukraine

Kamen Zahariev, Senior Legal Counsel in the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, has been named the Bank's Director for Ukraine. He succeeds Andrew Seton, who has left the Bank after a distinguished tenure.

Mr Zahariev will bring to Ukraine 11 years of experience in banking transactions and project management across the EBRD's countries of operations. In London headquarters, he also played a pivotal role in structuring the Nuclear Safety Account, the Chernobyl Shelter Fund and other multi-lateral programmes to improve nuclear power safety in the countries of operation.

Mr Zahariev is a native of Bulgaria and holds a PhD in International Law from the Academy of Sciences in Berlin. He also holds an advanced degree in International Law from the Moscow Institute of International Relations. He is the author of several publications in German and English on public international law, banking and finance. His appointment will help to maintain the Bank's high profile in Ukraine and to implement currently adopted strategy.

Bill Franks, Deputy Director for Ukraine, will be Acting Country Director until Mr Zahariev assumes his responsibilities in Kiev on 15 March 2003.

The EBRD's cumulative investments in Ukraine stand at €1.4 billion through 57 projects.
