Saccomanni appointed Vice President at EBRD

Fabrizio Saccomanni, a director of the Bank of Italy, has been appointed Vice President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, responsible for the evaluation, operational and environmental support functions.

Mr Saccomanni, 60, currently serves as the Bank of Italy's Central Director for International Affairs. During a career of 35 years at the Bank of Italy, including a five-year secondment to the International Monetary Fund in Washington, he has served as head of international research, managed foreign-exchange reserves, liberalised foreign-exchange controls, directed exchange-rate-policy operations, and overseen country-risk and emerging-markets analysis.

He has been chairman of the Gold and Foreign Exchange Committee at the Bank for International Settlements, as well as a member of the International Relations Committee of the European Central Bank. He has served as the Bank of Italy's representative on key committees of the European Union, the Group of Seven and the Group of Ten.

Since 1999, Mr Saccomanni has been Chairman of the Working Table on Economic Reconstruction, Development and Cooperation - an important element of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe. He oversaw cooperation among South Eastern European countries, major donors in the G-7 and the European Union, and international financial institutions (World Bank, EIB, EBRD, EU Commission) related to infrastructure projects, private-sector development, institution building (transition to market economy and promotion of investment) and trade liberalisation.

Mr Saccomanni holds a master's degree in economics and business administration from Bocconi University in Milan, and did postgraduate studies in international and monetary economics at Princeton University.

Mr Saccomanni was appointed by the Board of Directors on the recommendation of the President of the EBRD, following an extensive international search conducted by an executive recruitment firm.

He takes up his new post in February 2003, replacing Joachim Jahnke, who is retiring after 10 years at the EBRD.
