EBRD President meets Serbian Prime Minister
Jean Lemierre, President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), welcomed the visit today of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic and Special Coordinator of the Stability Pact for southeastern Europe, Bodo Hombach, to the Bank's headquarters. Mr Lemierre said he saw the visit as a measure of Serbia's goodwill towards the promotion of investment.
The visit follows the formal ratification last month of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia's membership to the EBRD, an institution set up to foster central and eastern Europe's transition to a market economy, and which is the largest institutional investor in the region.
During a private meeting, Mr Lemierre reaffirmed the EBRD's commitment to Yugoslavia and Serbia. He reviewed the role of the EBRD and its immediate priorities for 2001. The Bank expects in the coming months to provide much needed support to local micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. This sector, said Mr Lemierre, will provide an important backbone to a healthy market economy.
During his visit to the EBRD, Mr Djindjic will address the Bank's Board of Directors.
