Chisinau airport lands EBRD financing
Chisinau International Airport, the largest and busiest airport in Moldova, will be able to offer better service to its customers and further commercialise its operations through a sovereign-guaranteed US$ 9 million (ECU 8.2 million) loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
Thomas Maier, Senior Banker in the EBRD's Moldova team, said: "Two of the EBRD's priorities in Moldova are the financing of crucial infrastructure investments and the removal of critical transport bottlenecks. Upgrading Chisinau airport's facilities will help the country integrate into the international civil aviation network and promote economic development."
Ion Ciubuc, Prime Minister of Moldova, commented: "The refurbished terminal will be more conducive to attracting the business community to Moldova and will support the government's determination to develop the country as a foreign direct investment destination."
The proceeds of the loan will be used to modernise and upgrade the terminal building, to introduce new management and accounting systems, and for consulting services. In addition, the processing capacity of the terminal will be increased to cater for expected traffic growth in the coming years. Improvements are also expected in health and safety, public security and emergency response capacity. On the basis of previous experience with terminal modernisation, it is expected that more foreign airlines will use Chisinau airport as a final destination or for transit.
