International cooperation: nuclear safety

Nuclear safety continues to be a major area of concern in many of the countries where the EBRD operates. The international community provides significant funds to help decommission unsafe nuclear power plants and nuclear-propelled naval vessels. Funding also supports safe treatment and storage of nuclear fuel and radioactive waste, as well as confinement of the destroyed reactor in Chernobyl. 

The EBRD manages commitments of over €2 billion, spread across six nuclear safety and decommissioning funds. It provides technical, financial, legal and administrative services and carries out project management monitoring.
