Case Study: TAM upgrades pottery manufacturer in Russia

Konakovo Faience manufactures pottery in Konakovo, Russia, and is the town’s only significant employer (1,800 employees). The TAM Team identified a number of problems affecting product margins and profitability.

Recommendations included changing the present reliance on wholesalers to direct contact with export customers and a visit and training exchange was carried out with a UK factory. The product range was large and obsolescent and new product development was needed to bring more added value without increasing costs. Excessive production losses were investigated and reduced. Issues relating to product safety in relation to contact with food-stuffs were addressed. Systems for financial control were upgraded.

The span of command of the General Director was reduced and made more effective through the appointment of a chief operating officer and delegation to younger potential managers. The enterprise has made significant improvements to its marketing, product range, quality and foreign connections.
